Forward Forward

Dear member,

Every year, the credit union awards $6,000 in college scholarships to ten graduating high school seniors.

Once again, we’re accepting applications for the Donald DeVirgeles Memorial Scholarships. But because of extensive delays with the financial aid process this year, we’re not including financial need as a consideration for this year’s recipients.

Changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) have resulted in unprecedented delays in students and schools getting necessary aid data. This uncertainty has led to a lot of stress for students and families alike. As a result, for this year only, we’ve decided to simplify our process by eliminating the need for a FAFSA.

Applications are due on April 24. We’ll award two scholarships worth $1,000 and eight $500 scholarships to students who have demonstrated academic success and community or extracurricular involvement. High school seniors from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties can apply and we hope you do. Reading these applications is a highlight of our year.

NEWS FROM YOUR CREDIT UNION

Helping Hands for Desperate Paws
Last month, the credit union and our members donated nearly $1,000 to the Peru animal shelter, which has been working non-stop to care for the neglected dogs, many of which were malnourished. We are so grateful for your compassion; thanks to everybody who was able to help!

Let's Shred
Back by popular demand: Shred Day at our Tupper Lake branch (280 Park St.), when you’re welcome to bring your top-secret and not-so-top-secret documents . On Friday, May 17, from 9-11a, Adirondack Mobile Shredding will accept up to four Bankers Box-size cartons of material for safe disposal through its industrial-sized shredder. Here's the details.

Ordering Up Local Support
When Rachael Williams and her husband, Derek Carter, opened The Airport Diner in Potsdam last year, they fulfilled a long-held goal to open their own restaurant. As a locally owned place, they go out of their way to support other local businesses. They serve real maple syrup from a sugarhouse 15 minutes down the road. They buy cleaning supplies from a local vendor and some of their meat coms from a local butcher. Here's why.

Thanks Dan
As a finance expert, Dan Bower knows numbers inside and out. But as a member of our board of directors, our members often tell him the thing they value most about us can’t be measured on a balance sheet: The relationship they have with our people. As Bower plans to step down from the board, we'd like to say thanks.

Join Us
Another way to say thanks to Dan Bower is to join the credit union’s annual member meeting at The Clubhouse Restaurant at Tupper Lake Golf Club on Monday, May 13, at 6 p.m. Hear from credit union leadership about the financial health of your institution. Light appetizers will be served. We'd love to see you. Please RSVP by May 3.
