Adirondack Mobile Shredding will set up shop at our Tupper Lake branch (280 Park St.) on Friday, June 2, from 9-11 a.m. for a free Document Shred Event that is open to all. You’re welcome to bring up to five Bankers Box-size cartons of material to be destroyed. Don’t worry about removing staples or paper clips—they’ll all go through the industrial-sized shredding unit.

Credit card statements, medical paperwork, tax returns and other paperwork can have a lot of identifying information. That makes them a trove for identity thieves. When you do get rid of them, don’t just throw them in the trash—shred them.

If you’ve been holding onto years’ worth of papers, chances are, you can get rid of them. Experts say, in general, you can dispose of tax returns more than 7 years old; other records, such as utility bills, credit card statements and medical paperwork, can be disposed of more quickly.
